Wasserundurchlssige Tonbden ber tiefgrndig verwitterten kambrischen Tonschiefern ermglichten hier nach Ende der letzten Kaltzeit (vor 12. 000 Jahren) die Entstehung ausgedehnter Hochmoore. Deren viele Meter dicke Torfschichten waren jahrhundertelang eine wichtige Energiequelle fr die umliegenden Gemeinden.
