The shanks features give a pre signal for the horse when they feel the rein slide. This keeps the rider from having to engage as directly. I bought these pillows based on customer reviews. I got them and let them poof out after opening... But they are awful. They're soft but there's nothing to them. Very flat and not supportive. I'm literally buying different pillows tomorrow.
